O que é o There is / There are?

O there is e there are são flexões da forma verbal there to be ("there" + "verbo to be") no simple present (presente simples) que expressa o sentido de haver, existir ou ter. A forma verbal "there to be" varia de acordo com o número, ou seja, para o singular nós usamos o "there is" e no plural usamos o "there are".

Vejamos alguns exemplos usando o There is e o There are.

Exemplos - There Is e There Are:

There is a book on the table.
(Há um livro na mesa.)

There are two books on the table.
(Há dois livros na mesa.)

Dica - "there is" ou "there are":

A diferença entre "there is" e "there are" é que o "there is" é usado no singular enquanto o "there are" é usado no plural.

Uma coisa que costuma confundir os estudantes quando estão aprendendo a usar o "there to be" é quando se deve usar o verbo "to have" (Ter) ou o "there to be" (Há). Abaixo vamos aprender em que situação se deve usar um ou outro.

"There is / There are" ou "Has / Have"

Uma dúvida comum entre os estudantes de inglês é se devemos usar o "there is / there are" (há) ou o "has / have" (ter). Está dúvida geralmente ocorre porque no Português costumamos usar o verbo "ter" para expressar tanto posse quanto existência, já no Inglês não se usa o verbo "to have" (ter) quando queremos nos referir à existência de algo.

Has / Have - Usado para expressar "posse".

Exemplos:

I have a car.
(Eu tenho uma carro.)

She has a new skirt.
(Ela tem uma saia nova.)

There is / There are - Usado para expressar "existência".

Exemplos:

There is a car on the street.
(Há um carro na rua.)

There are four people here.
(Há quatro pessoas aqui.)

Agora que já vimos que o "has / have" (to have) é usado para expressar posse e que o "there is / there are" (there to be) é usado para expressar existência, então vamos ver um exemplo de como ficaria errado usar o verbo "to have" para expressar existência.

Has a student in the classroom ----> ❌ Errado

There is a student in the classroom. ----> ✔️ Correto
(Há um aluno na sala de aula.)

Só lembrando que "has" é flexão do verbo "to have" na 3ª pessoa do singular e que "there is" é a flexão do "there to be" no singular.

Uso do "There is" e "There are" na afirmativa, negativa e interrogativa

Agora que já vimos o que é o "there to be" então vamos ver como usar o there to be no simple present (presente simples).

O there to be no presente possui duas formas sendo o there is (existe / há) usado no singular e o there are (existem / há) usado no plural. Vamos ver o there to be nas 3 formas (afirmativa, negativa, interrogativa).

1) There is / There are - Afirmativa

Na forma afirmativa nós usamos o "there to be" na forma there is para o singular e there are para o plural.

Exemplos - There is / There are - Afirmativa:

There is a cat on the roof.
(Há um gato no telhado.)

There are two cats on the roof.
(Há dois gatos no telhado.)

O there is também pode ser escrito de forma contraída ficando assim there's (There + is)

Exemplo:

There's a cat on the roof.
(Há um gato no telhado.)

Vamos ver a tabela do there is / there are na forma afirmativa (affirmative form).

Afirmativa	Contração	Tradução
There is	There's	Há / Existe / Tem
There are	(Não tem contração)	Há / Existem / Tem

2) There is / There are - Negativa

Na forma negativa nós usamos o "there to be" na forma there is not para o singular e there are not para o plural.

Exemplos - There is / There are - Negativa:

There is not a cat on the roof.
(Não há um gato no telhado.)

There are not two cats on the roof.
(Não há dois gatos no telhado.)

As frases acima também podem ser escritas de forma contraída, para isto basta contrairmos o verbo to be com o not, ficando assim:

There is + not = There isn't (Ouça a pronúncia)
There are + not = There aren't (Ouça a pronúncia)

Exemplo:

There isn't a cat on the roof.
(Não há um gato no telhado.)

There aren't two cats on the roof.
(Não há dois gatos no telhado.)

Vamos ver a tabela do there is / there are na forma negativa (negative form).

Negativa	Contração	Tradução
There is not	There isn't	Não há / Não existe / Não tem
There are not	There aren't	Não há / Não existem / Não tem

Dica:

Também existe uma outra forma muito comum de fazer a negativa usando o "there is" ou o "there are" mais a palavra "no". Vejamos alguns exemplos:

There is no place like home.
(Não há lugar como nossa casa.)

There are no flowers in the garden.
(Não há flores no jardim.)

3) There is / There are - Interrogativa

Na forma interrogativa basta invertermos o verbo to be com o "there" ficando assim is there para o singular e are there para o plural.

Exemplos - There is / There are - Interrogativa:

Is there a cat on the roof?
(Há um gato no telhado?)

Are there two cats on the roof?
(Há dois gatos no telhado?)

Também podemos usar o there is e o there are para respostas curtas (short answers).

Exemplo:

Is there a cat on the roof? Yes, there is.
(Há um gato no telhado? Sim, há.)

Is there a cat on the roof? No, there is not.
(Há um gato no telhado? Não, não há.)

Vamos ver a tabela do there is / there are na forma interrogativa (interrogative form).

Vamos ver alguns exemplos de frases (com pronúncias) usando o there is e o there are.

There is not enough time for this.
Não há tempo suficiente para isto.

There are some people screaming outside.
Há algumas pessoas gritando lá fora.

There's a spider in my bedroom.
Há uma aranha no meu quarto.

There are many opportunities to learn at this company.
Há muitas oportunidades de aprendizado nesta empresa.

There are a lot of people in this elevator.
Há muitas pessoas neste elevador.

Is there a hospital nearby? Yes, there is a hospital around the corner.
Há algum hospital aqui perto? Sim, há um hospital virando a esquina.

Are there any eggs in the fridge? Yes, there are plenty of eggs in the fridge.
Há algum ovo na geladeira? Sim, há muitos ovos na geladeira.
