O que é o There To Be e quando usá-lo?

O there to be ("There" + "Verbo To Be") é uma combinação que expressa o sentido de haver, existir ou ter. Em inglês o verbo "there to be" varia de acordo com o número, ou seja, para o singular nós usamos o "there is" e no plural usamos o "there are" e ele também sofre variação de acordo com o tempo verbal sendo que no passado usamos "there was" para o singular e "there were" para o plural e no futuro usamos o "there will be".

Vejamos alguns exemplos usando o There to be em diferentes tempos verbais (presente, passado, futuro).

Exemplos - There To Be no Presente:

There is a book on the table.
(Há um livro na mesa.)

There are two books on the table.
(Há dois livros na mesa.)

Dica - "there is" ou "there are":

A diferença entre "there is" e "there are" é que o "there is" é usado no singular enquanto o "there are" é usado no plural.

Exemplos - There To Be no Passado:

There was a book on the table.
(Havia um livro na mesa.)

There were two books on the table.
(Havia dois livros na mesa.)

Dica - "there was" ou "there were":

A diferença entre "there was" e "there were" é que o "there was" é usado no singular enquanto o "there were" é usado no plural.

Exemplos - There To Be no Futuro:

There will be a party tonight.
(Haverá uma festa esta noite)

There is going to be a party tonight.
(Haverá uma festa esta noite)

Uma coisa que costuma confundir os estudantes quando estão aprendendo a usar o "there to be" é quando se deve usar o verbo "to have" (Ter) ou o "there to be" (Há). Abaixo vamos aprender em que situação se deve usar um ou outro.

Quando usar "There To Be" ou "To Have"

Uma dúvida comum entre os estudantes de inglês é se devemos usar o "there to be" (Há) ou o verbo "to have" (Ter). Está dúvida geralmente ocorre porque no Português costumamos usar o verbo "Ter" para expressar tanto posse quanto existência, já no Inglês não se usa o verbo "to have" (ter) quando queremos nos referir à existência de algo.

Verbo To Have - Usado para expressar "posse".

Exemplo:

I have a car.
(Eu tenho uma carro.)

There To Be - Usado para expressar "existência".

Exemplo:

There is a car on the street.
(Há um carro na rua.)

Agora que já vimos que o verbo "to have" (Ter) é usado para expressar posse e que o "there to be" é usado para expressar existência, então vamos ver um exemplo de como ficaria errado usar o verbo "to have" para expressar existência.

Has a student in the classroom ----> ❌ Errado

There is a student in the classroom. ----> ✔️ Correto
(Há um aluno na sala de aula.)

Só lembrando que "has" é flexão do verbo "to have" na 3ª pessoa do singular e que "there is" é a flexão do "there to be" no singular.

Uso do There To Be no Presente (Simple Present)

Agora que já vimos o que é o there to be então vamos ver como usar o there to be no Simple Present (Presente Simples).

O there to be no presente possui duas formas sendo o there is (existe / há) usado no singular e o there are (existem / há) usado no plural. Vamos ver o there to be nas 3 formas (afirmativa, negativa, interrogativa) do presente.

1) There To Be na Afirmativa do Presente

Na forma afirmativa do presente nós usamos o "there to be" na forma there is para o singular e there are para o plural.

Exemplos - There To Be na Afirmativa do Presente:

There is a cat on the roof.
(Há um gato no telhado.)

There are two cats on the roof.
(Há dois gatos no telhado.)

O there is também pode ser escrito de forma contraída ficando assim there's (There + is)

Exemplo:

There's a cat on the roof.
(Há um gato no telhado.)

Vamos ver a tabela do there to be no presente afirmativo.

2) There To Be na Negativa do Presente

Na forma negativa do presente nós usamos o "there to be" na forma there is not para o singular e there are not para o plural.

Exemplos - There To Be na Negativa do Presente:

There is not a cat on the roof.
(Não há um gato no telhado.)

There are not two cats on the roof.
(Não há dois gatos no telhado.)

As frases acima também podem ser escritas de forma contraída, para isto basta contrairmos o verbo to be com o not, ficando assim:

There is + not = There isn't (Ouça a pronúncia)
There are + not = There aren't (Ouça a pronúncia)

Exemplo:

There isn't a cat on the roof.
(Não há um gato no telhado.)

There aren't two cats on the roof.
(Não há dois gatos no telhado.)

Vamos ver a tabela do there to be no presente negativo.

Dica:

Também existe uma outra forma muito comum de fazer a negativa usando o "there is" ou o "there are" mais a palavra "no". Vejamos alguns exemplos:

There is no place like home.
(Não há lugar como nossa casa.)

There are no flowers in the garden.
(Não há flores no jardim.)

3) There To Be na Interrogativa do Presente

Na forma interrogativa do presente basta invertermos o verbo to be com o "there" ficando assim is there para o singular e are there para o plural.

Exemplos - There To Be na Interrogativa do Presente:

Is there a cat on the roof?
(Há um gato no telhado?)

Are there two cats on the roof?
(Há dois gatos no telhado?)

Também podemos usar o there is e o there are para respostas curtas (short answers).

Exemplo:

Is there a cat on the roof? Yes, there is.
(Há um gato no telhado? Sim, há.)

Is there a cat on the roof? No, there is not.
(Há um gato no telhado? Não, não há.)

Vamos ver a tabela do there to be no presente interrogativo.

Uso do There To Be no Passado (Simple Past)

Agora vamos ver como usar o there to be no Simple Past (Passado Simples).

O there to be no passado possui duas formas sendo o there was (existia / havia) usado no singular e o there were (existiam / havia) usado no plural. Vamos ver o there to be nas 3 formas (afirmativa, negativa, interrogativa) do passado.

(Não havia dois cachorros na rua.)

As frases acima também podem ser escritas de forma contraída, para isto basta contrairmos o verbo to be com o not, ficando assim:

There was + not = There wasn't (Ouça a pronúncia)
There were + not = There weren't (Ouça a pronúncia)

Exemplo:

There wasn't a dog on the street.
(Não havia um cachorro na rua.)

There weren't two dogs on the street.
(Não havia dois cachorros na rua.)

Vamos ver a tabela do there to be no passado negativo.

3) There To Be na Interrogativa do Passado

Na forma interrogativa do passado basta invertermos o verbo to be com o "there" ficando assim was there para o singular e were there para o plural.

Exemplos - There To Be na Interrogativa do Passado:

Was there a dog on the street?
(Havia um cachorro na rua?)

Were there two dogs on the street?
(Havia dois cachorros na rua?)

Também podemos usar o there was e o there were para respostas curtas (short answers).

Exemplo:

Was there a dog on the street? Yes, there was.
(Havia um cachorro na rua? Sim, havia.)

Was there a dog on the street? No, there was not.
(Havia um cachorro na rua? Não, não havia.)

O there to be (there is / there are) no futuro pode ser feito de duas formas, sendo uma usando o modal verb "will" e a outra usando a estrutura "going to". Vamos ver o there to be nas 3 formas (afirmativa, negativa, interrogativa) do futuro.

1) There To Be na Afirmativa do Futuro

Na forma afirmativa do futuro nós podemos usar o "will" ficando assim there will be (para singular e plural) e também usando a estrutura "going to" sendo "there is going to be" para o singular e "there are going to be" para o plural.

Exemplos - There To Be na Afirmativa do Futuro:

There will be a meeting tonight.
(Haverá uma reunião hoje à noite.)

There is going to be a meeting tonight.
(Haverá uma reunião hoje à noite.)

There are going to be five people at the meeting.
(Haverá cinco pessoas na reunião.)

2) There To Be na Negativa do Futuro

Na forma negativa do futuro nós podemos usar o "will not" ficando assim there will not be (para singular e plural) e também usando a estrutura "going to" sendo "there is not going to be" para o singular e "there are not going to be" para o plural.

Exemplos - There To Be na Negativa do Futuro:

There will not be a meeting tonight.
(Não haverá uma reunião hoje à noite.)

There is not going to be a meeting tonight.
(Não haverá uma reunião hoje à noite.)

There are not going to be five people at the meeting.
(Não haverá cinco pessoas na reunião.)

3) There To Be na Interrogativa do Futuro

Na forma interrogativa do futuro nós podemos usar o "will" ficando assim Will there be (para singular e plural) e também usando a estrutura "going to" sendo "Is there going to be" para o singular e "Are there going to be" para o plural.

Exemplos - There To Be na Interrogativa do Futuro:

Will there be a meeting tonight?
(Haverá uma reunião hoje à noite?)

Is there going to be a meeting tonight?
(Haverá uma reunião hoje à noite?)

Are there going to be five people at the meeting?
(Haverá cinco pessoas na reunião?)

There To Be - Exemplos com pronúncias

Vamos ver alguns exemplos de frases (com pronúncias) usando o there to be em diferentes tempos verbais (presente, passado e futuro).

There is a good Brazilian restaurant nearby.
Há um bom restaurante brasileiro aqui perto.

There is not enough time for this.
Não há tempo suficiente para isto.

Is there a hospital nearby? Yes, there is a hospital around the corner.
Há algum hospital aqui perto? Sim, há um hospital virando a esquina.

Are there any eggs in the fridge? Yes, there are plenty of eggs in the fridge.
Há algum ovo na geladeira? Sim, há muitos ovos na geladeira.

There was a fly in my soup.
Havia uma mosca na minha sopa.

There were two sandwiches on this plate.
Havia dois sanduíches neste prato.

Was there any pizza at the party? Yes, there was pizza at the party.
Havia pizza na festa? Sim, havia pizza na festa.

In the year 2031, there will be 300 million people in Brazil.
No ano de 2031, haverá 300 milhões de pessoas no Brasil.

There is going to be a party at my house tomorrow.
Haverá uma festa na minha casa amanhã.

Will there be any surprise tomorrow? Yes, there will be a few surprises tomorrow.
Haverá alguma surpresa amanhã? Sim, haverá algumas surpresas amanhã.
